Ofcom warns social media platforms of potential under-18 ban for non-compliance

Hanna Basha, Media & Privacy Partner at Payne Hicks Beach spoke to Solicitors Journal and offered a critical perspective on Ofcom’s warning to social media platforms of a potential under-18 ban if they fail to comply with new online safety rules for protecting children. The full article has been linked below with kind permission.

Hanna comments, “In the same week that Ofcom announced its investigation into OnlyFans for failure to implement age verification measures, it also announced further measures to protect children under the Online Safety Act,” Hanna observes. “These measures are a welcome development, but it is difficult to see how Ofcom will be taken seriously by social media platforms without demonstrating its commitment to levying serious penalties on offending platforms.”
